Key song: “New York City”
If there is one band on this list that encapsulated the fledgling DIY culture in Canada in the early to mid-’90s, it’s Cub. To start, their sound was so theirs that someone had to come up with a new word to describe it (even if that word is “cuddlecore”). Second of all, beloved Vancouver indie label Mint Records was basically built up around them. Third of all, they, along with East Coast contemporaries Plumtree and Jale, represented an inspiring movement of female musicians that decided to stop watching bands play and instead start forming their own rock bands. Cub’s second album, 1995’s Come Out, Come Out, is essential listening in the ’90s Canadian indie rock canon. It establishes Cub’s pop-punk sound, and is the cornerstone of Vancouver’s indie music scene. — A.G. on CBC Music
