Key song: “Bad As They Seem”

Hayden released a cassette of songs prior to this, but Everything I Long For was his first proper full-length. This album’s mix of folksy angst was so perfect for the times that it inspired a label bidding war, which included a direct offer from Neil Young to sign to his own manager’s label. Hayden’s eventual contract with Geffen subsidiary Outpost Records was said to be worth over $1 million, with a guarantee of complete artistic freedom. The most memorable song on this album is the sad “Bad As They Seem,” which agonizes over a fictional character’s quarter-life crisis; with its hopelessness, anxiety and melancholy, it’s a ’90s song through and through. — A.G. on CBC Music
