Key song: “Constant Craving”

After winning a Grammy Award for her 1989 album, Absolute Torch And Twang, lang traded in the twang to carry the torch for adult contemporary pop and blaze new trails along the way. Ingénue introduced an international mainstream audience to lang’s strong yet subtle songwriting, tastefully understated arrangements and utterly perfect vocals, which oscillate between powerfully subdued to downright powerful at just the right moments. The album’s biggest single, “Constant Craving,” not only won lang a Grammy, it also earned her a songwriting credit with the Rolling Stones five years later. When Keith Richards’s daughter recognized the chorus of the Stones’ “Anybody Seen My Baby” as uncannily similar to “Constant Craving,” the Stones named lang as a co-writer, although they couldn’t remember having heard her song. Does that speak more to the unforgettable pervasiveness of lang’s songwriting, or to the (probable) good times-induced forgetfulness of the Rolling Stones? Either way, it’s pretty freakin’ rad. — T.S. on CBC Music
