50-40’s Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret is the quintessence of Canadiana for two important reasons. First, because it borrows its name from the neon sign that hung on Vancouver’s Hastings Street for decades at the epicentre of the city’s changing entertainment scene; second, because even songs like the aggressively titled “Assoholic” and “Blame Your Parents” and the punk-influenced “Radio Luv Song” are delivered with a certain Canadian calm collectedness that sounds decidedly north of the 49th. After all, you can’t spell “awesome” without “earnest”. OK, you can.
