Key song: “Ali”
Along with Sloan, the Super Friendz, Thrush Hermit and Plumtree, Jale was a key part of the heralded Halifax Pop Explosion scene of the mid-’90s. They were the second Canadian band (after Eric’s Trip) to sign to Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, and regrettably only made two full-length albums before breaking up. Even though they are mostly remembered as having an all-female lineup, original drummer Alyson MacLeod left the band in 1995; So Wound sees her replaced with the Sadies’ Mike Belitsky. On this record, Jale also moved beyond its grunge beginnings toward the catchy indie-rock sound for which the Halifax scene became known. — A.G. on CBC Music
