Biografie
Wolf Alice are a four-piece alternative rock band from North London, consisting of Ellie Rowsell (vocals, guitar), Joff Oddie (guitars, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass), and Joel Amey (drums).
They released their debut single "Fluffy" in February 2013, the "Bros" single followed this in May. In October 2013, they released their debut EP Blush. Their second EP Creature Songs was released in May 2014 on Dirty Hit Records. On February 24, 2015 they released the lead single "Giant Peach" from their debut album My Love Is Cool, was released on the 22nd of June 2015, also via Dirty Hit Records.[1]
History
Wolf Alice formed in 2010 by Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie. Their name came from a short story by Angela Carter.[2][3] They self released an EP called Wolf Alice that year, with three songs on it-"Every Cloud", "Wednesday" and "Destroy Me"-as well as a video for "Wednesday". Drummer Joel Amey and bassist Theo Ellis joined the band in 2012, and they released the song "Leaving You" online on Soundcloud as a free download which gained airplay from BBC Radio 1 and featured in NME 's 'Radar' section.[4] After the song was released, they toured with Peace, and recorded a session for Huw Stephens' Radio 1 show in January. They released their first physical single "Fluffy" in February 2013 on the Chess Club label.[2][5]
The band released their second single "Bros" in May on Chess Club[6][7] "Bros" is one of the first songs that Rowsell wrote, which the band played in their early stages. In 7 October, Wolf Alice released their first official EP called Blush, and official video of the single "She". In December 2013, they were chosen as the single most blogged about artist in the UK in that year by BBC Radio 6 Music.[8] In 2014 they signed to Dirty Hit Records, and released their second EP Creature Songs in May. In December, the band were named "Best Breakthrough Artist" at the UK Festival Awards.[9] In late February 2015, Wolf Alice announced their debut album "My Love Is Cool", and shared the first single from the album, "Giant Peach".[10]
In April 2015, the London group released a reworked version of fan favourite "Bros" as the second single from their debut album.[11]
On 10 June 2015 Wolf Alice shared album track "You're a Germ" via the Soundcloud service.[12]
Musical style
While the group's early material was folk-tinged pop, they became more rock-oriented after the rhythm section joined.[13][14] Clash described the band as "the lovechild of folk and grunge".[2] The "Fluffy" single saw the band compared to Elastica and Hole, while the single's B-side, "White Leather", saw comparisons to The xx.[15][16][17] Kitty Empire, writing in The Observer described their sound as "an engaging strain of off-kilter indie rock".[3] The band describe their music as "rocky pop".[18] The Daily Telegraph declare Wolf Alice's debut album as 'feral and sophisticated' in review.[19]
Song usage
The song "Moaning Lisa Smile" is played during the episode Solace for Tired Feet of HBO's television series The Leftovers.[20] It also appeared in the promotional trailer of Arrow's season 3 mid-season premiere.
